INTERLACING
Enough said! If you are going to project a large image which takes some time to down load then interlace it. Most graphics editors offer a facility to do this, and again it is a matter of simple courtesy to your reader to use it. Never assume that your reader is going to be obligingly patient. If you lose their attention then you've fallen down on communication before you've started.
The image on the left is INTERLACED. It actually takes the a little longer to load than the other file because it is 2K larger, but you get a much earlier idea of what it is. The image on the right is not interlaced and it comes at you in installments. When the bandwidth is not up to it, then it can be a minute or so before your reader has any idea what it is. In that time you could have lost them.
